Harvey Wang is a humanist documentary photographer in the cataloguing tradition of August Sander’s great project. Wang’s scope may be more modest, but his work is no less attuned to the time of its conception... Because of Wang’s essential modesty in the face of his subjects it may be that his considerable formal talents as a photographer are overlooked, but again, his not calling attention to formal qualities in his work is both concordant with its purpose, and a measure of his particular seriousness. Once his pictures are looked at hard, they reveal a luxury of textured surfaces and grades of light.

Choosing a favorite from among Harvey Wang’s photographs in Holding On is as vexing as selecting your best-loved child or Lester Young solo. Wang’s humanist eye is prodigious and he honors his subjects with his lens...Let’s be grateful Harvey Wang is among us, rendering portraits worthy of their subjects."
-Patrick Kurp, Sunday Gazette
"Harvey Wang's photos of the inhabitants and interiors of four Bowery hotels, are at once restrained and engaged, poignant but never without wit. Though many of the men he's photographed have hit a dead end, Wang's subject is not hopelessness but humanity and the fierce tenacity of survivors against all odds...Wang conveys these stories tactfully, artfully, and with the assurance of someone who trusts his subjects as much as they trust him.
-Vince Aletti, The Village Voice
“What all photographs have in common is the essential role of light and light-sensitive materials in the production of an image, but there are many routes toward that end. This collection (From Darkroom to Daylight) of interviews and personal narratives, accompanied by Harvey Wang’s splendid portraits, offers a revelation and hence an invaluable record of key issues in how and why photographers today choose to go one way or the other, toward film or digital methods, toward darkroom or daylight.”
